Wicks bill would whisk sugary drinks out of checkout aisles

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —Yesterday, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) introduced AB 765, the California Healthy Checkout Aisles for Healthy Families Act, which would prohibit stores from placing sugar-sweetened beverages at checkout aisles.

Assemblymember Wicks responds to Governor Newsom’s 1st State of the State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —Today, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s first State of the State address:

In his first State of the State address, Governor Newsom showed us why California truly is the keeper of our nation’s future. Governor Newsom has it right: the fear-mongering and scapegoating emanating from the White House won't solve our problems. California and the United States can only overcome our shared challenges if we stand up for truth and work hard—together."

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords joins California State Legislators to Announce Formation of Gun Violence Prevention Working Group

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Today, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) joined Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, representatives of Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence, and fellow legislators to announce the formation of a new bicameral working group to prevent gun violence in California.

“I’m proud to be one of the people here to announce the formation of the gun violence working group and humbled by the work of my fellow legislators, many of whom have done tremendous work for years on this issue,” said Wicks. “I’m honored to have Gabby in the Capitol today and it’s personally very meaningful to me.”

Assemblymember Buffy Wicks Appointed To Five Assembly Committees

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, D-Oakland, was appointed today to the following Assembly committees: Budget, Public Safety, Banking and Finance, Privacy and Consumer Protection, and Rules. In addition to being appointed to the Budget Committee, Assemblymember Wicks was appointed to the influential Budget Subcommittee 4 on State Administration, which has jurisdiction over state funding for housing and homeless programs, the Franchise Tax Board and the administration of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the California Child and Dependent Care Credit, the Workforce Development Board, and many other critical programs administered by the state.

“I am honored to receive appointments to five committees that are charged with shaping policy in many critical areas of our state.” Assemblymember Wicks said.  “Serving as a Member of these committees will allow me to play a serious role in addressing some of the most significant issues affecting the residents and working families of Assembly District 15, including: housing affordability and homelessness, criminal justice reform, reducing the tax burdens on working families and parents facing costly child care expenses, and ensuring consumer protection in digital and financial spaces. I thank Speaker Rendon for trusting me with these committee appointments and look forward to working with my colleagues and my community stakeholders on policies that will positively impact my district and our state.”

 

Assemblymember Wicks Sworn in to Assembly for her First Term

(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), is a community organizer, an advocate for kids, and a grassroots activist with experience at the local, state and federal level. She was born in a small town in rural California and grew up in a trailer, raised by working class parents who pushed her to work hard and think big. Her priorities will be fighting for equality, equal opportunity, and economic security, with a particular focus on policies affecting women and children. Wicks Takes Oath as Newest Assemblymember for 15th District

(SACRAMENTO) - Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) took the oath of office to serve as the Assemblymember for the 15th Assembly District today in a special ceremony at the California State Capitol. The oath was administered by Assembly Speaker Anthony  Rendon.
